Outlaw, criminal, hero, victim; the story of Australian legend Ned Kelly is integral to the character and spirit of Australia. In our small tour group we’ll explore the fascinating world of Ned Kelly and his gang.

In Ned Kelly’s hometown Avenel we’ll enjoy a morning tea and explore his childhood. From here we’ll track his life as we travel to Glenrowan to view an educational and entertaining production about the history of the Kelly Gang. Taking a break from the life of bandits, we’ll enjoy lunch at the renowned Tatong Tavern. Afterwards we’ll visit Stringybark creek — the site of the dramatic shootout between the Kelly Gang and police — before visiting the town of Mansfield.

What you need to bring

Hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes (no open sandals please), insect repellent, clothing for warm and cool weather (it can have cool winds up top on the mountain), rain jacket, camera and your sense of adventure.

Visit the house where Ned Kelly was born and raised as a young child.

Avenel

Enjoy morning tea at the Old Bridge in Ned Kelly’s hometown Avenel. We’ll explore Ned Kelly’s childhood and family life – how he saved a drowning boy, and was forced to deal with crippling poverty, the death of his father and his mother’s confrontations with the law. From here we’ll track how Ned Kelly grew into the famous fugitive.

Glenrowan Tourist Centre

Enjoy an interactive, theatrical production about the Kelly Gang’s final shootout in 1880 at Glenrowan.
Through the brilliance of animation, you will travel back over 100 years in time to witness the events that led to the capture of the Kelly Gang who were wanted by police for two years. The show is educational, historically correct and entertaining.

Lunch at Tatong Tavern

Take a break at The Tatong Tavern, a quaint Tudor style hotel built in the early 1900’s.
Enjoy a hearty bar meal as you experience true Victorian country hospitality.

Stringybark Creek

Visit the site of the ‘Kelly outbreak’ of 1878, where the Kelly Gang shot three policemen in a dramatic shootout. Initially wanted on lesser charges, this shootout increased the seriousness of the Kelly Gang’s crimes and marked them as outlaws. We’ll explore what led to the shooting and the nature of all characters involved.

Mansfield

We’ll head back down the mountain through Mansfield township, with a visit to the Courthouse and the significant marble monument to the policemen shot at Stringybark Creek.

Return to Melbourne

Relax as we cruise back to the drop off location arriving approx. 6.30pm.
